Hi

My name is Ant Baker and I'm an illustrator. Until recently I was happy just doodling in my sketchbook and showing the work to my friends. However my friends have been encouraging me to look into the idea of printing and selling my designs on t shirts as well as putting a book together. However I am concerned that my work may impinge on trademarks/copyright/image rights etc...

My works are all original drawings usually of a movie/tv character or personality with one of their quotes underneath.

If you google 'Ant's Popped Culture Tumblr' you will be able to see my blog and examples of my work.

As you can see, fairly minimal in terms of the quote and the image has been created by myself, but I am concerned about the possibilities of legal action so I would like to be 100% confident of selling my work without repercussions before going ahead.

I've spent the morning reading through several fascinating threads on this forum in attempt to gain a greater understanding of the area and shed some light on my quandary but if anything I am now more confused than ever! In addition to this I've seen other online sellers happy to sell more overt 'homages' than mine despite the grey area, so it has all left me a little confused...

Any advice or information you could give me would be greatfully received!

Many thanks

Ant

Hi Ant,
The artwork looks completely original to me, and the quotes are clearly insubstantial, so based on the Tumblr images I don't think you have anything to worry about with either copyright or trade mark law.
Good luck with your project.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the speedy reply! That has definitely given me peace of mind! I'm still a little concerned as I saw someone do something a little similar and receive a cease and desist order but hopefully I will be ok!

Many thanks

Ant
