Hi Andy As usual that is terrific advice. My book has now gone to print, so if anyone is interested, more info can be found at http://www.buttercupdairycompany.co.uk/ Thanks for this and your previous advice. It has been exceptionally helpful to me in navigating through this unfamiliar and complex p...

Book Design Copyright

Who owns the copyright of a book design? Is it the designer or the party who commissioned and paid for the design? The issue is important if you want to change the book designer to make alterations. Books are designed using a Quark file, which can be changed relatively easily but designers only supp...

Hi Andy.

Yes. It is a famous case.

This is a good story of a man who became wealthy through his business skills and then gave it away quietly in his final ambition to die a poor man.

There are some great pictures hence my concern to publish them and sort out copyright.

Hi Andy Thanks for your very thorough reply. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Been away for a few days. I think you have covered everything except case law, and I doubt there is anything there, since a 2010 legal article backs up your view. I had a look at the 2003 regs but there is nothi...

Hi Andy Yes it is the same project but I separated the questions because I thought they would raise different issues. Thanks for the very thorough reply. I never thought about the author of the brochure, but I suppose a brochure is just like a book, except that the author is rarely identified and of...

Latest Legislation Old Photos

I am now really confused over the rights to publish photos with unknown copyright, which are over seventy years old. I thought this was governed by the 1995 Regulations which clearly state that in such instances copyright expires 70 years after creation. This would mean that, subject to making reaso...

Hi Andy Thanks for your message and comprehensive reply. There should be no problem getting the permission to publish from the current photo owners since they gave me the photos specifically for that purpose. However, they don't know the identity of the photographers since the photos were generally ...

Publishing Photos From Eighty-Three Year Old Brochure

I want to publish some photos out of a 1928 company brochure. The photographer is unknown and the company went into liquidation in 1992. As I understand the law, commissioned photos prior to 1988 were the copyright of the commissioner and not the photographer. Also the copyright lasted fifty years a...

Publishing Old Photos

I have a number of old family photos, given to me by various people, that I want to publish. They range in date from 1904 to 1939. The people who gave me the photos do not know the identity of the photographers so as far as I am concerned the copyright holder is unknown. It is my understanding that ...
