Re: Credit and sales restrictions on sewing patterns

Aah…thanks, Andy - that’s good to know. I’ll certainly keep that in mind, now, as this is uncharted territory for me - the idea of recreating pre-designed artwork but having restrictions on its use seems very counterintuitive, so I shall take care. Thank you so much again for the huge amount of help ...

Re: Credit and sales restrictions on sewing patterns

Gosh, that is interesting (and the contract aspect was something I really didn’t anticipate - I shall tread warily around that)! I’m fairly sure that I’ve not encountered a registered design yet, but will keep an eye out for it. Thanks, Andy, as always, for your excellent attention to detail and spee ...

Credit and sales restrictions on sewing patterns

Good evening all I’ve been wondering about this for a while, and thought I’d leap in and get a view from you guys, please. I’m a regular purchaser of assorted gubbins on Etsy. I generally tend to buy graphics for my own craft creations, but recently have strayed into the realm of arty soft toy patte ...

Re: Don’t Panic, 42 and The Hitchhiker’s Guide

Ahh……that’s fab! Thanks so much, as always, for your excellent and erudite response, Andy. The t-shirts won’t be sold, so there will be no trade taking place. I will just steam ahead, and my daughter (a huge Hitchhiker’s fan) will be eternally grateful to you for your words of wisdom 😊 I love the ide ...

Don’t Panic, 42 and The Hitchhiker’s Guide

Good evening All I have a small query, if I may, please? As usual, it’s textile related (so apologies for that). I’ve been pondering over the words I might use on a t-shirt for a family member, but it made me wonder about the broader use of short words and phrases which are associated with par ...

Re: Screenshots and copyright law

Thanks for the update, Andy. Gosh, it’s a complicated old business!

As ever, your understanding of the whole shebang and erudite support has proved invaluable to me (and, in fact, to us all).
I will do my level best to ensure that my next project won’t be the sewing of mailbags 😏

Re: Screenshots and copyright law

Aah…..that’s marvellous news, thanks, Andy.

I was just pondering how much of my research stuff should be jettisoned in the interests of copyright, and I now think probably none. Hurrah!

Thank you as always for your excellent and sensible advice - you’re an absolute treasure 😊

Screenshots and copyright law

Good evening all This is a general query, if I may, please, prompted by discussion with several friends on the subject of screenshots. As a creative sort of person, I often come across interesting or striking images which I’d like to record (if not for posterity, then at least for a couple of weeks w ...

Re: Copyright status of a public domain image used by a commercial company

Haha - I actually laughed out loud at that! Thanks again, Andy - I’m fairly sure that the image is American, as most of the images on this site are (and Mr Bumpus certainly is/was). I shall press on with it (although I will avoid making the text content similar to Spoonflower’s). Hugely grateful for ...

Re: Copyright status of a public domain image used by a commercial company

Hi Andy Huge thanks for this, as ever. I’m fairly certain it’s quite an ancient piece of art and originated in the US - the Graphics Fairy includes the original image (the one that the ‘doctored’ one was created from) and it appears to be a really old trade advertising card (from a fruit and confect ...

Copyright status of a public domain image used by a commercial company

Good afternoon all I have a query if I may, please? I have managed to confuse myself utterly with this one, and am changing my mind about the copyright status on an hourly basis. I am a big fan of Graphics Fairy (an online resource which has a library of thousands of copyright free clip art images ...

Re: Wikipedia, Attribution and Public Domain images

Aah…..thank you so much, Andy. I’m so pleased! Yes, I really do remember your mentioning the rule regarding pre-1945 photographs, and this was what puzzled me about the licence claim. The possibility of crossing swords with an organisation as huge and formidable as Wikipedia certainly gave pause for ...

Wikipedia, Attribution and Public Domain images

Hi All So sorry - back again earlier than anticipated! I am still ploughing away through many, many suffrage/suffragette images from various sources (lots from the LSE, who make their attribution requirements nice and precise) but lots also from Wikipedia and Wiki Commons. The latter are proving ...

Re: Magazine copyright - editors or contributors?

Aah……that’s excellent news, thanks so much, Andy! All of the items that I currently want to tinker with (‘Millinery Styles for Middle-Aged Women’, etc) are anonymous, so I shall press ahead with those with gay abandon. I’ve noted the information regarding the Lutterworth Press, though, and will certa ...

Magazine copyright - editors or contributors?

Hi guys I’m so sorry to trouble you all again - I seem to be haunting these pages of late! I have a query regarding copyright of an annual (The Girl’s Own Annual, in fact), dated 1910/11, if I may please? The annual is a compilation of The Girl’s Own Paper and Woman’s Magazine. The title pages procla ...
