Re: The natural world and depictions thereof

Hi Andy Huge thanks for your speedy and erudite response as always - I’m sure that your excellent advice has already saved me from an alternative career sewing mailbags! Copyright issues remain a mystery to me. I may rethink my moth - my original template was cut from the outline of an actual moth, ...

The natural world and depictions thereof

Good evening everyone I would be so grateful, please, for any guidance regarding artistic representations of the natural world, and the copyright laws regarding it. I have for some months been considering making a few bits and pieces with 3D textile butterflies/moths attached. This would be, basical...

Re: Use of JRR Tolkien Elvish Script and Images

Good morning Andy Great to be back! Thank you for your speedy and erudite reply as always. Oooh.....what a botheration! I thought I’d nailed it there - there are no less than 24 downloads of it in various styles on Etsy, many claiming to be suitable for decal use on T-shirts, mugs, etc, and at least...

Re: Still tracking copyright for Rider Waite Tarot Cards

Hi Helen et al Have just seen this (just a few years late!). You probably know this already (and I am probably barking up the wrong tree) but there is a coloured version of 43 of these cards available ‘royalty free’ via Dover Publications, which you can use ‘for graphics and craft applications, free...

Re: Use of JRR Tolkien Elvish Script and Images

Good afternoon all Despite a long period of inactivity, still thinking about you guys! You will be distressed to know that I haven’t given up on this theme yet (persistent, if nothing else). I have been closely watching Etsy in an attempt to ascertain whether users of the Tree of Gondor motif have b...

Re: Knitting patterns and character copyright

Oh, how funny! Thank you so much as always for your excellent erudite and speedy response, Andy (and for making me laugh such a lot). Never fear, Hergé’s honour is safe with me!

Best regards

Sally

Re: Knitting patterns and character copyright

Hi Andy Thank you as always for your speedy reply. This is a huge help but I should have probably made it a bit clearer that the sweaters actually feature knit-stitched reproductions of the characters themselves (rather than just resembling garments worn by them). As far as I can judge, they are pro...

Knitting patterns and character copyright

Hi All Sorry about the deeply unimaginative title! Was wondering if you could clarify something for me, please? I have just bought a ‘retro’ knitting pattern booklet (dating from, I would say, 1990s) of sweaters depicting characters from Hergé’s Tintin. The knitting pattern designer is still very mu...

Re: Recycled textiles

Ah, that’s good to know! Thank you so much as always, Andy, for your excellent (and speedy) reply. I can blithely continue to clothe our carnival group in Ikea costumes without fear of retribution (well.....at least from Ikea, anyway....the carnival group themselves may be a different matter!). Best...

Recycled textiles

Good evening everyone. Was sorting through my textile stash this evening, with the intention of starting a new sewing project and pondering on the amount of fabrics I have which are (or will be, I hope) recycled. A dread thought has struck me - I have been gaily using second hand curtains and duvet ...

Re: Format of arts events/experiences

Hi Andy Thank you - that’s good to know. It’s very difficult to get people to engage with arts projects as a general rule, so it seems an excellent idea to introduce wine and music to lower inhibition! As you suggest, we will do our own thing with regards to advertising (and I will make a point of n...

Format of arts events/experiences

Good evening guys I’m not quite sure that I’m in the right place for the answer to this, but I shall launch into the issue anyway and rely on your kindness to point me in the right direction if I’m way off the mark! I’m part of several small charitable-status arts groups in the small seaside town wh...

Re: Old books and the illustrations therein

That’s wonderful news, Andy - thank you so much as always for your speedy and erudite reply! I had been pondering this issue for some time as I frequently haunt secondhand bookshops in the hope of picking up copyright-free material (particularly old Victorian art books) - I have always been slightly...

Old books and the illustrations therein

Hi again guys Wonder if you can help with this one, please? It’s a bit contorted and I would (possibly!) know the answer if I was dealing with the first layer of the enquiry but am not sure about the historical aspect. I am thinking about buying a book and would like to use the illustrations for a d...

Re: WW2 Naval Publication Maps

Thank you, Nick. I’ll get my friend to check out the National Archive, too. She already has an artist on the starting blocks, I think, as regards the map so it would be good to look at other sources.

Thank you all, as always, for such great advice.

Best regards

Sally
