Re: Still tracking copyright for Rider Waite Tarot Cards

Thank you for that link, Andy! I will sit down and watch the video... I think I'm covered by (1ZA)c where it says "the extent of the quotation is no more than is required by the specific purpose for which it is used..." I only make use one line of one of the poems, and the scenario is that...

Re: Still tracking copyright for Rider Waite Tarot Cards

Thanks for this response; sorry I've not replied sooner but I'm still living in hope Random House might get back to me. (laughs hysterically) I might send them another email... "Eagerly anticipating your reply with bated breath" kind of thing. Unfortunately the Dover Book wouldn't ...

Re: Intellectual Property Infringement

I remember seeing clocks like that at Camden Market years ago... and I found a photo of them online. This was taken in 2013; I doubt that it helps, but maybe showing others are doing exactly the same thing might strengthen your argument? https://www.bravoyourcity.com/story/collectibles-at-camden-lock

Re: Still tracking copyright for Rider Waite Tarot Cards

Hello, Andy- I thought I'd give you a brief update... I had a little bit of too-ing and fro-ing with Random House- despite me sending them detailed emails explaining exactly what I was asking and explaining why I couldn't use their online request form, I received several auto-generated emails tellin...

Still tracking copyright for Rider Waite Tarot Cards

The original thread on this subject can be found here Dear Andy- I am still going around in circles with trying to optain permission to use the images of the Rider Waite deck as illustrations in my novel... it's become quite the challenge! :? I did contact Mr. Semken as you advised me to do , and I...

Re: Arthur Waite/ Pamela Coleman Smith Cards

I do still have the contact details for his chambers, so I'll try that tomorrow... and I will avoid contacting US Games, too. I did think they'd probably attempt to charge me for using the images regardless of the status. Thanks so much for all your extremely helpful advice, Andy- I really do apprec...

Re: Arthur Waite/ Pamela Coleman Smith Cards

I just had another barmy idea... there was another book, copied from Waite's- by an American author L.W. de Laurence in 1918. According to this site- at the bottom of the page it says "This work was published before January 1, 1925, and is in the public domain worldwide because the author died ...

Re: Arthur Waite/ Pamela Coleman Smith Cards

I tried emailing one more time, and yesterday phoned the office and they told me he retired, probably back before October... the woman I spoke to wasn't entirely sure since she started there about then, (his photo and details are still on what I am guessing must be a cached version of their website....

Re: Arthur Waite/ Pamela Coleman Smith Cards

Andy and Nick- I did contact the barrister whose name you provided me with three weeks ago, and so far I've heard nothing back. I'm not sure how to proceed now... after the holidays are over I think I'll try phoning the offices of the firm he is listed with to see if he is still working for th...

Re: Arthur Waite/ Pamela Coleman Smith Cards

Andy and Nick- Wow , thank you so much for all this information- what an amazing amount of work you've both done! Sincere apologies for not replying more promptly- I've been in Manchester and away from my PC since Thursday and have only just seen this. I'll contact the address you've provided me wit...

Re: Arthur Waite/ Pamela Coleman Smith Cards

I'll try your suggestion and apply for an Orphans Work License, thanks for that link! I went through my twenty-four illustrations, and discovered they contain a total of 160 individual cards, (ouch, if the charge is for each one separately.) Since some cards are used more than once, I'll need to fin...

Arthur Waite/ Pamela Coleman Smith Cards

Hello, Andy- A similar sort of question was asked of you several years ago- you answered it in some depth, and my enquiry relates to that same topic. https://www.copyrightaid.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=1073&p=2349&hilit=rider+waite#p2349 My question differs slightly: I'm concerned a...

Re: Postcard Copyright- Museum, or the Artist?

Thanks for your help, Andy. :) It proved to be too complicated, so I've gone with a simpler option- an Edwardian postcard with a photo on it of a stage actress in costume. I did find this information on a similar postcard of around the same date, (same actress) saying it's believed to now be in the ...

Postcard Copyright- Museum, or the Artist?

Hello, Andy- I am hoping to include photo collages as illustrations in with the novel I'm working on. A vintage postcard I'd like to use was published in 1943 by the Museum of Natural History in Belgium. They printed a series of postcards of prints in their collection... birds, painted by Hubert Dub...

Can I mention a drug by licensed name?

In my novel, one of my characters says she's taking Prozac (she isn't) as a way to cope with her tedious and much-hated office job. I'm probably being overly cautious, but pharmaceutical companies are very protective of their products and I'm not sure how Eli Lilly would be about me using the name o...
