I know someone that has a business producing tour itinerary books - the books that bands use when they go out on the road and are only distributed to band and crew members. There is art work provided sometimes by the band but not usually album cover art - would this art be copyrighted?

Hi Jayfbee
The short answer is yes, any artwork is automatically subject to copyright at the point it is recorded in permanent form. In theory this applies equally to doodles as it does to a David Hockney painting.
The artist does not need to take any formal steps such as registering his work in order to gain copyright protection. If someone other than the artist wishes to exploit the work they need permission from the artist.
