Copyright Text on Merchandise

I want to create and sell merchandise with a slogan on it. I am aware that you can not copyright words/phrases/slogans. However, can I copyright a slogan which has a particular colour and font as part of the overall design?

For example: say my slogan was "I like Cheese". Now I know that I can not copyright that slogan in general. But can I copyright the design of "I like Cheese" writen with Ariel font in the colour red? So that no one else can put "I like Cheese" written in Red Ariel font on a product (they may write it in green or in Castellar font....but not red in Ariel font)

I appreciate any advice

You are right that copyright does not apply to short phrases per se.

IF the wording is combined with 'artistic' elements - and thus create a logo - then this will be a copyright work, (assuming it is suitably unique at least).
