Hi all,

I understand that creative commons pictures can be used without payment as long as the requirements are met. But some photos licensed under CC are also sold in stock houses. I'm confused about their legal status, like this particular photo: ... otostream/
It was first uploaded to Flickr under CC2.0 by United Nations Development Programme and sold on Getty Image. If I use this photo, will Getty Image hunt for me? Hope you can help.

Hi Anna,

Yes that is confusing. I don't know the answer, but possibly the Getty licensed image is intended for commercial use, which the CC licence does not allow.

If I am right, then it would depend on your intended use as to whether Getty might be likely to come after you. If in doubt, I suggest contacting the United Nations Development Programme who claim to be the rights owner, and if they believe your intended use meets the CC licence terms, that should protect you if Getty come calling!

Hi Andy,

It's a good idea to contact the UNDP. Thanks for the suggestion. :) :)
