I was hoping to make my own retro bubblegum cards with images of footballers from the 1950s and 60's.
So for example Gordan Banks - am i allowed to do this?
Who do I need to ask permission from - Gordon Banks?
There are images available to buy from getty images for example - so I would use them.

The only copyright aspect to what you want to do is making sure that you have permission from the copyright owner to use the images in the way you want. If you source them from places like Getty, make sure that you get the appropriate licence for your needs. Read up on the difference between Rights Free and Rights Managed
The advantage of using a reputable agency such as Getty is that they will be able to supply images which already have the necessary clearances
to be used on a commercial product such as your cards, so you have less worry on that aspect. The biggest hassle with using images from other sources, like photographers who don't use an agency to sell their work, will be that you are personally responsible for checking if the personality concerned has given permission for his/her image to be used in connection with such products. In most cases of people in the public this won't be a major issue as they are used to the idea of fans and collectables. However making assumptions can lead to problems, as in the Eddie Irvine case
