Football Club Names

Post by author1 » Tue Nov 15, 2011 5:13 pm

I am an author wanting to write a book about a premiership club. I know that club badges and shirts are copyright controlled but are the actual names of the clubs also subject to copyright restrictions?
Thanks

Hi Author,
No, club names - or indeed any normal names - are not covered by copyright because they are judged to be 'facts' and not the product of a creative mind. But it is possible that many football cubs will have registered their names (and their badges) as trade marks. This is mainly to protect their merchandising. Thiis should not cause you any problems with regard to your book, so long as you don't give the impression that any club is endorsing your views.
