Can I shoot signs of business?

Post by Halie0201 »

Hi,

I want to use some city scenes in my videos. Can I shoot the shop signs in my video? It will last about 1-2s. I will edit and add it in a longer video(around 40 minutes). Can I do it?

Looking forward to your answer!

Hi halie
From the way you have described this venture, there shouldn't be any problem with this. Many signs, especially those containing logos of one sort or another will be registered as trade marks, but merely reproducing a trade mark does not, in itself, amount to infringement. There may also be an percentage of the signange which will be protected by copyright as artistic works (think of the Aldi logo) but mere names alone in a standard font (Marks & Spencer, for instance) aren't protected by copyright. However since you are shooting the street, it is inevitable that some signage will be included, and so you will be covered by the exception which allows incidental inclusion of copyright works, especially as the length of time a sign is in shot will be fairly short.
