film screening in a conference

Post by sin_kar » Mon Jun 02, 2008 5:39 pm

Hi,

I need help for my tentative conference workshop. I am an MSc student and would like do a film discussion night, including screening the whole film, at our department's 3-day conference. However, I and my tutor, we are not sure how the copyright applies for film screenings for these purposes. Can we screen the whole film in our conference workshop or how would the laws apply? Answers to this question will be appreciated.

Thank you.

S.

If your tutor is doing this within an educational establishment for the purpose of instruction or examination, then I believe this would be classed as 'Fair dealing' (no permission is needed).

Otherwise you would probably need a licence - the people to contact for this are FilmBank http://www.filmbank.co.uk/
