Modifying typefaces of open source fonts

Post by Anna »

If I modify the typefaces of fonts licensed under SIL, GNU, Apache and MIT license, do I have to release my modified font under the same license? If I keep it for my own use and do not distribute it, can I claim copyright for it?

Hi Anna,
Sorry I must have missed this when you first posted it. Yes if you republish something which had been released under a public licence such as GPL or Creative Commons, then you have use the same licence. However you still own the copyright in the part that you modified/created and of course you do not have to release your modified version if you don't want to apply the GPL etc licence.
