Can I use Babylon free source in Goldendict?

Post by Halie0201 » Sat Jun 11, 2016 4:35 am

I found an open source dictionary software GoldenDict http://goldendict.org/and it can be compatible with Babylon .BGL file. Is it legal for me to use the free dictionary from Babylon http://www.babylon-software.com/free-dictionaries/on this software if I don't buy Babylon?

Hi Halie,

If something is issued under an open source licence (as the Babylon dictionaries appear to be) and you abide by their licence terms, along with any other general terms and conditions, there shouldn't be any copyright problems. However it is worth stressing that I haven't actually studied the terms in detail, so I don't know if there are any specific prohibitions on what you want to do. As with all such acquisitions, you should read the terms before downloading etc as in most cases you will have been deemed to have read and agreed to them by clicking on the download button.

However in principle I can't see any reason why doing what you propose should cause problems, but you would really be better asking the company if there is any doubt.
