Describing a video or image in words'

Post by keith_12345 »

If I described a video or image in words, in my own work, in detail, is it copyright infringement?

Hi Keith,

No, that would be fine. Obviously if the video had dialogue you should not quote too much of the actual words used (the usual fair dealing rules apply), but just summarising in your own words would not involve copying of any part of the expression in the other work, just its idea. We covered that dichotomy in an earlier thread.

How about plots of films?

If I described a film plot in words and in detail after watching the film, would that be copyright infringement?

Hi Keith,

No, as I said above. that would not infringe copyright. You would be describing the idea which is not itself protected.
