book covers

Post by debbiewaller » Thu Jan 25, 2018 4:32 pm

Can I publish a book cover image alongside a review? I have read around and quotes from the book itself seem to come under fair use, but what about the cover image?

Hi debbie,

Yes that would be allowed. The part of the Act covering the exception to copyright for the purposes of criticism or review says this
(1) Fair dealing with a work for the purpose of criticism or review, of that or another work or of a performance of a work, does not infringe any copyright in the work
The key words are "or another work", which in your case would apply to the book cover. Obviously you also need to comply with the requirement to credit the author, but I would expect that to happen automatically as part of your book review.
