Dutch crown design

Dear Members,

I am creating an interactive eBook (Alice in Wonderland).
I am using 3D models as the basis of my illustrations.

I purchased a 3D model of a crown which was modelled after the Dutch crown.

QUESTION:
I did modify the crown a bit. But it's still based on an actual crown that is used by the Dutch monarchy.
- Am I legally safe? Or there could be issues?
- Or shall I further modify the crown, if yes how much?
- Or is it OK as it is?

Hi Steve,

I can't comment on Dutch law with respect to any special protection (Royal Prerogative) which the Royal regalia may enjoy, but given that image of the crown has been made available, seemingly with full permission for them to be reproduced, by the Dutch Ministry of Defence, I think you are on fairly safe ground. The design of crowns of this type all share certain common features, and in this case I would say that the most distinguishing feature of the Dutch crown is the 8 broad arches. The design of the 3D model shows some significant differences including, but not limited to, the texture of the orb and cross which surmount the crown. I think the design is OK as it is and doesn't need any further modification.
I have no idea exactly when the Dutch crown was first made (the Wikipedia article suggests it was in the mid nineteenth century), but unless it was within the last 120 years, it is unlikely that any copyright will apply to it.
