Post by nomadd »

Can I use a song title with credits and artist name to print on t-shirt (and other products)? For example:

Love Me Do
(Lennon/McCartney)
The Beatles

Thanks.

Hi nomadd and welcome,

Yes that should be OK. Names of people and things like bands are not normally subject to copyright. Similarly titles of books and songs etc are also not usually subject to copyright because they are too short to qualify as original works.

The main issue you face is trade mark law and passing off. However it would seem unlikely that anyone seeing this logo on a tee shirt is going be confused that the clothing is somehow an authorised product of the Beatles or their record company.

You say you want to print this on 'a' tee shirt. If that is all you are doing, trade mark law won't be an issue. However if you want to print many tee shirts and sell them, it would be highly advisable to put a disclaimer on any advertising and packaging stating that the shirt is not the authorised merchandise of the particular band or singer.
