Do I need a copyright for my live performance

Post by David Matchette » Sun Sep 04, 2011 9:33 pm

I have several recordings of my band performing in various venues all of which have music use contracts with the appropriate organizations.

I would like to include some of the music on our website and possibly allow it for free download.

Some of the songs are covers.

What do I need to do to not be in violation of copyright?

Thanks

Hi David,
To perform cover versions without falling foul of copyright you need permission from the songwriters. It is quite likely that the writers will have signed over their rights to a music publisher, who would therefore be the ones to give permission. However the easiest way to deal with this is through PRSforMusic. They have various tariffs, including one for internet use.
I hope this is of help.
